Aloittaa huolella ja ajatuksella, vajoutua ja jatkaa työtä lämmöllä, jota ei mitkään syrjävaikutukset tai hätäileminen ja artistimainen turhamaisuus keskeytä ja muuta inhoksi. Tehdä vähän, mutta hyvin. Tehdä niinkuin parhaiten tuntee eikä ajatella suurenmoisuutta.”
Näin kirjoitti Eero Järnefelt päiväkirjaansa vuonna 1897. Samalla tavalla mekin haluamme työtämme tehdä: syventyen ja tuntien, että saa tehdä parhaansa. Tärkein tavoitteemme on tehdä oikeutta suomalaisille audiovisuaalisille teoksille, jotka tavoittelevat yleisöä ulkomailla, sekä ulkomaisille töille, joita tuodaan suomalaisen yleisön nähtäviksi.
Tehtävässämme tarvitsemme asiakkaidemme apua. Ranskalainen av-kääntäjien järjestö ATAA on julkaissut erinomaisen oppaan käännösten ja dubbausten teettäjille. Suomessa puolestaan on julkaistu laatustandardit sekä av-käännöksille että heikkokuuloisten ohjelmatekstityksille. Alla ovat tiivistetysti meidän suosituksemme ja toiveemme.
Suunnittelu ja aikataulutus
Toivomme, että projektin käännöstarpeet suunnitellaan jo tuotannon alkuvaiheessa. Käännöksen merkitystä ja kääntäjän roolia lopputuloksessa ei tule aliarvioida: hän on viimeinen lenkki tuotannon ja yleisön välissä, ja jos työn joutuu tekemään hätäisesti, muiden aiemmin tekemä työ ei saa arvoistaan kohtelua.
Olemme mielellämme mukana suunnittelemassa työtapoja jo treatmentista tai ensimmäisestä käsikirjoitusversiosta lähtien. Kun tiedämme aikataulusta edes suurin piirtein ja saamme materiaalit eli hyvälaatuisen videotiedoston sekä dialogilistat hyvissä ajoin, voimme ehdottaa keskuudestamme sopivinta kääntäjää. Näin hän puolestaan voi valmistautua työhönsä ja rauhoittaa kalenteristaan ajan, jolloin täysipainoinen omistautuminen onnistuu. Autamme mielellämme myös dialogilistojen teossa.
Pitkän elokuvan käännöstyöllä haluamme varata koekatseluineen 2–3 viikkoa, riippuen työmäärästä. Ja tämän ajan toivomme voivamme aikatauluttaa hyvissä ajoin etukäteen. Väistämättä tulee tilanteita, jolloin tarvitaan nopeaa käännöstä, ja useimmat kääntäjät ovat tähän valmiita – mutta eivät toistuvasti.
Yhteistyö ja yhteydenpito
Käännöksen läpikäynti yhdessä ohjaajan ja käsikirjoittajan kanssa ja keskusteluyhteys käännöstyön aikana on osoittautunut erittäin hyödylliseksi moneen otteeseen. Tämä on ollut tärkeä tekijä lukuisten muiden kuin englanninkielisten elokuvien menestyksessä. Toisin sanoen erittäin olennainen työvaihe, jota ei sovi unohtaa!
Hinnoittelu
Käännöstöitä hinnoitellessamme noudatamme alan työehtosopimusta. Se takaa kääntäjille kohtuullisen korvauksen työstään sekä mahdollisuuden ammattilaiselle näyttää osaamisensa. Laajemmassa katsannossa kaikki voittavat, kun työehtoja kunnioitetaan eikä väärästä paikasta tingitä.

To do little but to do it well. To follow your heart without succumbing to grandiosity.”
This is what Eero Järnefelt wrote in his diary in 1897, and this is what we also strive for; the ability to immerse ourselves in our work and feel that we are working to the best of our abilities. Our greatest aim is to do justice to Finnish audio-visual works aimed for international distribution as well as foreign works being brought in front of the audience here in Finland.
In order to reach this goal, we need help from our clients. The French audiovisual translators association, ATAA, has created an excellent guide for those responsible for commissioning subtitles or dubbing work, and below you’ll find our own recommendations.
Planning and Scheduling
Our wish is that the translation needs for a specific project would already be planned in the early stages of the production. The significance that the translation and the translator have for the final product is not something to be underestimated: he or she is the final link between the production and the audience, and if the translation has to be done hastily the work of those involved in the previous stages of the production will not receive the treatment it deserves.
We always appreciate the chance of being involved in the productions and figuring out the working practices from the very beginning, starting with the first treatment or draft of the screenplay. As long as we are informed about the schedule and provided the necessary materials (dialogue lists and/or spotting lists and a high-quality video) in good time, we can suggest the most suitable translator for the project who can then familiarise themself with the material in advance and arrange their schedules so that they can fully dedicate themself to the work.
For feature-length films, the adequate time for completing the translation (including a test screening) would ideally be 2–3 weeks, depending on the amount of work required. We also wish to be allowed enough time for scheduling the work and preparing for it well in advance. Inevitably, there will be instances when rush jobs are required, and most of our translators are prepared for this – but not repeatedly.
Cooperation and communication
Reviewing the translation together with the director or the screenwriter and communicating with them during the translation process has proved valuable many times in the past. This has been an important factor in the success of several non-English-language films, so it’s a stage that should not be neglected!
Pricing
When pricing our work, we adhere to the collective agreement for AV translators in Finland. It ensures that the translators get a reasonable compensation for their work and get a chance to properly show their professionalism. In the grand scheme of things, everybody wins when the terms of employment are respected and no compromises are made in regards to the quality of the work.
